My Daily Morning Routine
My Daily Morning Routine (and why it’s important)
We all have a daily routine whether we realise it or not. My daily morning routine was a bad one (well unproductive at least) for a long time. It went a little bit like this…First things first, a cup of tea and a browse through social media and emails… This is not the best way to start a productive day! Before I knew it, an hour had gone by and I was engrossed in the gorgeous little kitten who was being snuggled by it’s mum in the cutest way imaginable.. doh! A pleasant, feel good way to spend an hour but not productive IN-THE-SLIGHTEST!!
After reading Hal Elrod’s Miracle Morning (totally worth a read), I realised (better late than never) that I had to change my whole morning routine. I have adapted my own routine that works best for me.
Of course, the morning really starts the evening before, by making sure that I go to bed early enough to be sure that I get the right amount of sleep (that I need, everyone is different of course) to wake up early… for me this is 11pm – 6am.
6am: The very first thing that I do for My Daily Morning Routine is drink a large glass of water. (Not because of the Gin that I drank the night before 🙃 )
Next I brush my teeth and then head downstairs, dressed in my gym gear. I spend five minutes sitting in silence, just being in the moment. It took a while for me to be able to do this form of, I guess, mediation. I always have about one thousand and one things going on in my head so it wasn’t easy to ignore those and just, be. It is well worth persevering with though as I find it the one thing that I look forward to the most!
Now is when I’ll make a cup of tea!
6.15am: Once I have had my five minutes of silence, sipping my tea, I move onto the next element which is affirmations, or rather positive thoughts. I have struggled a lot with myself on why I didn’t think positively. It must just be in my make up. Anyway, I have been working on this a great deal and it’s starting to work. One of my biggest worries was that my couples wouldn’t like their images and I used to let it get the better of me. But now I realise that, if my couples see my work on my web site and they like what they see, why on earth wouldn’t they like their own images!?! It was a defining moment for me when I pushed aside this way of thinking and now I acknowledge that they will love their images!
6.20am: I read a couple of chapters from the latest book that I’m reading. At the moment it’s ‘She Takes on The World’ by Natalie MacNeil. I’ve read it once before about a year or so ago, but some books are worth a revisit. I rarely find the time to read during the day so it’s a real treat to be able to just sit and read, uninterrupted, for 20 minutes or so in the morning. I will usually read inspiring books at this time (I read more fiction in the evening just before I go to sleep) in order to get me fired up for the day ahead. They usually do.
6.40am: I write in my journal. I will write whatever is on my mind that morning, or what I intend on achieving that day. Sometimes I will write what happened from the previous day, good or bad, it all goes in there. I write whatever I feel like writing.
6.50am: It’s exercise time! Sometimes, I’ll do yoga, sometimes I’ll go to the gym. But whatever I do, I always do something. It’s really important to me to be fit and healthy.
7.50am: Finally, in My Daily Morning Routine, It’s time to shower, dress and have breakfast.
All of these things I do before I’ve even looked at my phone, laptop, emails or any social media. By this time, I’m ready to deal with whatever the day is going to bring. By doing this daily routine my day’s are so much more structured and I am more more productive for that.
